MACKINAC COUNTY (WWJ) - A woman in Northern Michigan is behind bars after she was found trying to hide from police in a tree after leading authorities on a lengthy high-speed chase in a suspected stolen vehicle.

The Mackinaw City Police Department said in a press release that the trouble began over a suspected stolen vehicle. Officers received a call around 6:30 p.m. Sunday from the Midland Police Department about the crime and was informed that the vehicle in question had been supposedly tracked to their jurisdiction.

Police were able to find the suspected stolen vehicle near a casino and tried to speak with a female suspect , but she "took off," the department added.

"The suspect led officers in an approximately 50 mile high speed pursuit throughout Cheboygan County driving recklessly, passing multiple vehicles unsafely and in no passing zones, disregarded several red lights and stops signs at intersections and obtained speeds in excess of 100mph at times," officials continued in the release.

Police said the woman, identified only as a 36-year-old Cadillac woman, eventually ditched the vehicle after it became stuck on an unplowed road and tried to escape police on foot.

A K9 team from the Cheboygan County Sheriff's Department was called in to help find the suspect. And while it took several hours, the dog eventually tracked her down.

"After several hours of tracking, the suspect was located in a tree and was taken into custody," the police department said.

The suspect was taken to the Cheboygan County Jail and faces multiple charges, including possession of a stolen vehicle, fleeing and eluding, resisting and obstructing police, reckless driving and malicious destruction of property to a police vehicle.

The police department added that the woman -- whose name was not released -- could possibly face additional charges in the future.
