ALPENA (WWJ) -- A Michigan woman is facing a criminal charge after police say she didn't scan all of her items at a Walmart self-checkout.

TeddyJo Marie Fliam, 34, of Alpena, was arraigned in 88th District Court on Tuesday on one count of first degree retail fraud, in connection with an alleged incident over the summer.

According to Michigan State Police, on Friday, July 1, a trooper from the MSP Alpena Post was called to the Walmart on M-32 to take a report about a theft at the store.

A loss prevention associate reported to police that a woman using the self-checkout, later identified as Fliam, was "skipping items" and not paying for them.

The employee said that he confronted Fliam, but that she became agitated, denied any wrongdoing and left the store.

The associate began reviewing self-checkout surveillance, police said, and documented over $1,000 of merchandise not scanned at the self-checkout by Fliam since April 2022.

A report was submitted to the Alpena County Prosecutor’s Office and an arrest warrant for Fliam was authorized on Sept. 23.

Fliam was arrested at her home on Sept. 29 and was lodged in the Alpena County Jail, according to MSP.

In Michigan, first degree retail fraud is a felony punishable by up to five years in prison and/or $10,000 fine, or three times the value of property stolen.
