SOUTHGATE (WWJ) -- One house was leveled and several more were damaged in a deadly explosion in Southgate.

Authorities on the scene on Edison Street and Burns, which is near Dix-Toledo and Northline, are calling the situation some type of "gas event."

Southgate Police said officers arrived on the scene at 5:45 a.m. Thursday to find a 38-year-old man who'd been blown from the home into front yard. He was rushed to a hospital, where he's being treated for extensive burns and serious internal injuries.

Police and firefighters then found a 37-year-old woman trapped under rubble in the home near an active fire. She was pulled from the debris and taken to a hospital where she died of her injuries.

The one house, located on the southeast corner of Edison/Burns St., was completed destroyed, police said, while a second home had severe damage from the fire and blast.

WWJ's Mike Campbell reported other neighboring houses had windows blown out and other damage.

Investigators remained on the scene later in the morning, trying to determine what happened.

"This investigation is on-going and being treated as a gas related issue. DTE and Fire Investigators along with Southgate Detectives are investigating the root cause," the police department said, in a statement.

"We ask the public to stay out the area as crews work diligently to clean a large debris field from the blast."

The name of the woman who died was not immediately released.
