(WWJ) Michigan State Police are searching for a suspect who shot a woman on a local freeway overnight.

Police said it happened just after midnight Monday along westbound I-96, between Joy Rd. and W. Chicago Rd.

Officers responded to a call to the McDonald's on Grand Rive Ave. after a woman ran into the restaurant saying she'd been shot on the freeway.

MSP investigators said the woman was driving when an unknown driver came up behind her in the left lane and fired shots, before driving away.

The 27-year-old Redford woman then pulled over, jumped out of her car, ran into the McDonald's, and called 911. Police and EMS responded, and she was taken to a hospital where she was listed in stable condition.

The suspect remains a large, while MSP detectives are investigating.

“Troopers located items of evidence along the freeway,” said MSP First Lt. Mike Shaw, in a statement. “Right now troopers are trying to determine a motive for the shooting and get a better description of the unknown suspect vehicle."

Anyone who witnesses the shooting is asked to contact police at 855-MICH-TIP or the Crime Stoppers tip line at 1-800-SPEAK-UP (800-773-2587). Anonymous tips can be submitted online at this link.
