DETROIT (WWJ) An officer-involved shooting in Detroit injured a woman who attempted drive her car into police, authorities said.

Detroit Police told WWJ they attempted to pull the woman over on McNichols at Sherwood, just west of Van Dyke, during the afternoon of Sunday, October 26.

“She wouldn’t show her driver’s license and registration. She wouldn’t get out of the vehicle,” Detroit Police Chief Todd Bettison said. “She did, from what I’ve been told, make a call to 911.”

Police said officers eventually used pepper spray after she refused to “comply.”

According to authorities, she drove away. Officers conducted a second traffic stop on her at Concord and Outer Drive and “blocked her in.”

“More verbal orders were given…” Bettison said. “She still didn’t comply and moved the vehicle into the direction of one of the scout cars and officers. At that point, fearing for their life and the lives of others, officers fired multiple shots.”

The gunfire struck her in both arms and her leg.

According to police, she was struck while inside her car. She drove to a Detroit Police training facility on Sherwood and 7 Mile, where officers went into “life-saver mode” and rendered aid, Bettison said.

First responders arrived at the scene and rushed her to the hospital.

“I am happy to report she’s in stable condition and she will survive,” Bettison said. He added she has an expired CPL (Concealed Pistol License). However, he said he does not know her motive or if she has a criminal history.

Police are stepping up traffic enforcement in the city of Detroit, according to Bettison.

“My message to the public, when you’re driving a vehicle and you’re pulled over, you have to comply,” he said. “You have to by state law provide your driver’s license….the last thing you want to do is flee, or drive at reckless speed.”
