MONROE TOWNSHIP (WWJ) A fallen tree limb struck and killed a worker in Monroe County, sheriff's officials said.
The Monroe County Sheriff's Office said it happened on Saturday, May 30, at 7:05 p.m. in Monroe Township, in the area of Timber Lane near South Dixie Highway.
Two deputies responded to the scene, along with personnel from the Monroe Community Ambulance and Monroe Township Fire Department.
When they arrived, they found a 50-year-old Springfield, Ohio man who had died from his injuries.
Their preliminary investigation suggests three workers from the Dayton area were hired to cut down a tree at the house. While cutting the final section of the tree, estimated to be about 30 feet in length, one of the workers grabbed the rope as it fell. The descending tree struck him in the head.
Authorities are investigating why he grabbed the rope.
The Lucas County Coroner's Office will conduct an autopsy.
The Monroe County Sheriff's Office Victims Unit and Sheriff's Office chaplains assisted deputies at the scene. The Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration (MIOSHA) is participating in the investigation.
The worker's name was not released.
