TROY (WWJ) -- A wrong-way driver allegedly caught in the act by police in Oakland County is facing charges under Michigan's "Super Drunk Laws."

The suspect, a 36-year-old man from Birmingham, was pulled over by Troy Police at around 2:45 a.m. on Sunday, July 16.

According to the police report, officers initiated a traffic stop after they spotted the driver, in a 2022 Audi AZ, committing multiple violations including driving eastbound in the westbound lanes of Big Beaver Road, near Civic Center Drive in Troy,

When speaking with the man, officers said they noted that he was lethargic and was slurring his speech. They also said there was a noticeable smell of alcohol coming from the Audi.

The cops said the driver admitted that he'd drank several cocktails before driving, before he failed a series of field sobriety tests.

The driver then refused to take a breathalyzer test, and was arrested.

He was taken to the Troy Police lock-up where he did agree to take a chemical breath test, with results of .182% and .187%, according to police.

The man was issued a citation for Operating with a Blood Alcohol Content of .17% or More, and PBT (Preliminary Breath Test) Refusal.

Under Michigan's Super Drunk Laws, drivers with a BAC more than twice the state's legal limit of .08% face stiffer penalties, including a possible jail term of up to 180 days if convicted.

The man's name was not immediately released.
