He was our friend and co-worker at WWJ Newsradio 950 and also a friend to our listeners, bringing you the stories of the day from Detroit and across Southeast Michigan. Someone recently described him as a hero, and we can't argue with that.

We are heartbroken to share that WWJ Reporter and Anchor Mike Campbell died suddenly on Sunday. He was 65 years old, having just celebrated his birthday at the end of May.

His family says he suffered a massive heart attack.

Mike covered the streets of Metro Detroit for nearly three decades, and also anchored the Saturday morning news on WWJ.

He was a fearless reporter, with unique style — a way of talking to and connecting with the people who were a part of the stories he told.

One story none of us will forget: The snowy 2019 morning when Mike was out covering the story of a missing woman in Shelby Township. Believe it or not, Mike found the 89-year-womam himself, and kept her warm in the news car until authorities arrived.

Just the week before that, Mike helped police apprehend a man suspected of looting a fire-damaged shopping center in Warren.

Mike loved to talk about his family, and his passion for boating and spending time outside, traveling around the state. He had a special fondness for the Upper Peninsula and Marquette, where he attended college.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Mike's wife Terri, his children, his extended family and many friends.

A public viewing will be held from 3 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Friday, June 13, at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home in Milford.

On Saturday, June 14, there will be a viewing from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. at Oak Pointe Church in Milford, to be followed by a funeral service, also at the church, from 11 a.m. until noon.

The family has set up a Go Fund Me account to help pay for the funeral as well as college expenses for their three children who attend Northern Michigan University.
