(WWJ) - A 6-year-old boy faces spinal and brain injuries after a two car crash on the Southfield Freeway Sunday afternoon.

Michigan State Police said two cars were travelling southbound on the Southfield at Plymouth Road just after 5 p.m. Witnesses told police that both vehicles were trying to merge into the middle lane. To avoid colliding, one vehicle lost control, drove up an embankment and hit a concrete wall.

One of the passengers in the car, a 6-year-old boy from Ecorse, was unresponsive, but breathing. He was taken to Oakwood-Dearborn Hospital with a possible spinal injury (paralysis) and brain injury.

While troopers were still on scene, they were informed the boy was being transferred to Children's Hospital in Detroit with life-threatening injuries.

"It is important to make sure when changing lanes that you make sure that the lane is clear before you do so," Michigan State Police First Lt. Mike Shaw reminded, in a Tweet. "While the initial prognosis isn't good, we hope that this child is able to recover fully."

The boy's mother and brother were also transported to Oakwood-Dearborn with minor injuries.

The freeway was briefly closed during the investigation.
