DETROIT (WWJ) -- An investigation is underway after a house fire on Detroit's east side claimed the life of a small child Monday morning.
Detroit Deputy Fire Chief Dave Fornell tells WWJ that firefighters were called to the scene at a house on Camden Avenue, near I-94 and Chalmers Street around 11:40 a.m. Monday.
When fire personnel arrived, they were told a small child was in a back bedroom of the home and they immediately entered the home, knocking down the flames. When crews reached the bedroom, they found the child's body badly burned on the floor.
The age and gender of the child have not been disclosed. The child's mother was inside the home at the time of the fire, which was completely contained to the room where the child was at.
Police and fire crews are still investigating the cause of the fire.
