PONTIAC (WWJ) – Two young children are hospitalized after a fire tore through a Pontiac apartment complex Tuesday morning.
The fire broke out around 12:30 a.m. Tuesday in a building at the Cornerstone Townhomes in Pontiac and when crews with the Waterford Regional Fire Department showed up, two of the six units in the building were engulfed in flames.
Firefighters were told two young children were trapped inside an upstairs bedroom so crews made the quick decision to make “an aggressive interior attack” and search and rescue, according to Fire Chief Matt Covey.
Firefighters made it to the second floor and were able to rescue the kids, ages 2 and 4. They were taken to a local hospital before being transferred to Children’s Hospital in Detroit.
Both were listed in critical condition, Covey said.
Before firefighters arrived the children’s mother was able to break a window and throw her infant child to a bystander before jumping out herself, according to Covey. They both reportedly suffered minor injuries.
While two units were heavily damaged in the blaze, Covey said the fire originated in the unit where the family lives, but the cause remains under investigation.
