GROTON TWP, OH (WWJ) -- Officials have confirmed that a 19-year-old mid-Michigan woman was among the deceased in Friday's massive pileup on the Ohio Turnpike in Erie County.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol said that Emma Smith of Webberville was killed as a result of the 46-car pileup on a stretch of the well-trafficked toll road.
Although authorities have not determined the official cause of the crash that started the tragic chain reaction, icy roads and whiteout conditions from the winter storm were likely a contributing factor.

Photos taken by drivers on the opposite side of the Turnpike revealed cars and semis crushed together. Others showed rescue and clean-up efforts, including cranes brought in to remove vehicles.
Three others were killed in the tragic crash, including a pregnant Toledo woman. Two children in her vehicle were also hospitalized.
