NEWBURG TWP. (WWJ) -- Michigan State Police investigators say "excessive speed" appears to have been a factor in a deadly single-vehicle crash in Cass County.

According to officials with the MSP Fifth District, neither occupant was wearing a seatbelt when a 2023 silver Chevy Trailblazer was traveling on Corey Lake Rd., at County Line Rd. in Newberg Twp. at around 11:20 a.m. Tuesday.

MSP said the driver, a 26-year-old man from Jones, Michigan, was speeding when he lost control of the SUV, ran off the roadway and hit a tree.

Both he and his only passenger, a 23-year-old woman from Elkhart, Indiana, were ejected from the vehicle.

Both people were rushed to a hospital where the young woman died of her injuries.

Police said the driver was being treated for life-threatening injuries. He remained in critical condition of Tuesday evening.

At this time, MSP said it's not known if alcohol or drugs may have also been a factor, as the investigation continues.

MSP troopers were assisted by Cass County Sheriff’s Office, Newberg Fire Rescue, Pride Care Ambulance and Life Flight.

No names have been released.
