YPSILANTI TWP. (WWJ) - A man suspected of stabbing another man to death in Washtenaw County is in custody after an hours-long standoff with police on Thursday.
The barricaded situation began in the early morning hours Thursday when police were called to the Aspen Chase Apartments on International Drive in Ypsilanti.
Authorities told WWJ earlier in the day the suspect, a 27-year-old man, stabbed a 44-year-old man then barricaded himself in a nearby apartment.
The Washtenaw County Sheriff's Office announced around 3 p.m. the suspect had been "peacefully" taken into custody.
Police have not released the names of the suspect or victim, and the circumstances surrounding the stabbing were not immediately clear.
Authorities said a large police presence will remain in the area as they investigate the scene.
Another person who was inside the apartment with the suspect was able to evacuate to safety around 10:30 a.m., police said. That person confirmed to police the suspect was armed with a gun.
Neighbors were evacuated and part of the apartment complex is inaccessible, officials said.
At this time, the circumstances that led up to the stabbing are unknown as police work the scene.
"We ask that you please avoid the area," officials said.
