Among the perplexing results of a look into the American psyche is this -- The same country that chose Donald Trump as president, dominantly citing his anti-immigration views as the reason say in a new survey their views on immigration have shifted positively ... And 79% now say immigration is a good thing.

That's a record high.

In the new Gallup poll, the number of Americans who say they want immigration reduced has dropped to 30%. That's down from 55% in 2024.

Support for Trump's immigration policies has also decreased, with 62% of Americans disapproving of his handling of immigration.

Political party affiliation influences views on immigration. For instance, 48% of Republicans still want immigration slowed. Among independents, this sentiment is down 21 points to 30%, and among Democrats, the desire to slow immigration is down 12 points to 16%, per Gallup.

There's also separation by ethnicity, with Hispanic adults showing lower support for deporting immigrants and saying they're more likely to support immigrants getting a pathway to citizenship.

"These shifts reverse a four-year trend of rising concern about immigration that began in 2021 and reflect changes among all major party groups," Gallup wrote. The findings are based on a June 2-26 Gallup poll of 1,402 U.S. adults, including oversamples of Hispanic and Black Americans, weighted to match national demographics.
