PHOTOS: Buffalo streets filled with pedestrians, sleds, snowmobiles and skis in aftermath of blizzard
They're digging out, walking to stores and helping one another out
Buffalo, N.Y. (WBEN) - Late Tuesday I ventured out on the streets of South Buffalo and the vision was remarkable.
South Park Avenue was a plowed pedestrian way as scores of people were in the street, walking to any open store and restaurant, and stopping frequently to help one another out.
As I went past the Family Dollar, I heard kids laughing and playing, only to look up and see Joe and his kids high atop a mountain of snow that rivaled the sign post for the store. "Enjoying the day," said Joe as his kids were digging and sliding down the giant pile as others walked by with bags in tow.
A little further down South Park, I noticed Tonya in the street at the end of a driveway, pushing snow with a small plastic shovel. The snow along the sides of the street and her driveway towered over her small frame as I asked her about managing the overwhelming amount of snow. "Thank God, good people help us some," she said.
In my short time along South Park, there were sleds passing by, some with children and some filled with groceries and items purchased at local shops along the route. There were skis, a snowmobile, throngs of pedestrians and a smattering of cars making their way down one of the main plowed streets in the city.
As I passed side streets and looked down, some were cleared with one lane of traffic, some blocked by abandoned cars and snow. All were busy with people in the streets shoveling, blowing, plowing and moving the snow that has bound them home for days.
"I'm trying my best to handle the situation," Tonya told me.
