Will Wordle still be free after NYT purchase?

The New York Times added another offering to their bureau of word games this week, purchasing the recently-introduced and highly popular game, Wordle. Creator Josh Wardle announced the sale on Monday.

The Times announcement of the purchase reports that it was for, "an undisclosed price in the seven figures."

Wordle joins the Times' lineup of popular daily puzzles, including the New York Times Crossword, the Mini crossword, Spelling Bee, Letter Boxed, Tiles, and Vertex.

Wardle stated in his announcement that Wordle "will be free to play for everyone" after it moves to the Times' site. He also says they're working to make sure players' existing streaks and wins are carried over when the games moves to its new host.

"The Times remains focused on becoming the essential subscription for every English-speaking person seeking to understand and engage with the world. New York Times Games are a key part of that strategy," Times stated in a press release. "Wordle will now play a part in that daily experience, giving millions more people around the world another reason to turn to The Times to meet their daily news and life needs."

The Times says millions of people are playing Wordle every day.

"I see it everywhere, I saw Sue Thomas playing it the other day," exclaimed 97.1 FM Talk host Marc Cox. "How do you spell profit!"
