A petition filed by a group of Minnesota voters today looks to try and block former President Donald Trump from appearing on the state's presidential ballot next year.

In a filing with the Minnesota Supreme Court, the group of petitioners, including former Minnesota Secretary of State Joan Growe, argues that Trump is disqualified from public office under the rarely used "insurrection clause" of the 14th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.

Minnesota Secretary of State Steve Simon released a statement this afternoon, saying his office is aware of the lawsuit. He said he hopes the court resolves the issue to allow for the orderly administration of the elections in 2024.

Constitutional lawyer Jill Hasday joined News Talk 830 WCCO's Adam and Jordana last week to discuss the 14th amendment and why it might be used to stop Trump from seeking reelection.

The amendment says if someone has taken an oath to obey the Constitution while serving as an elected official and then participated in an insurrection or rebellion against the U.S., they are barred from holding federal office unless two-thirds of the House and Senate give them amnesty.

"Where, although he didn't pick up a weapon, he participated in various activities, allegedly riling up and promoting the mob violence," Hasday said.
