SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS RADIO) – A California man who went missing in May has been found dead in a remote area of Death Valley.
A news release by the National Park Service confirmed Saturday that the body of 69-year-old Long Beach resident John McCarry was found on Wednesday.
McCarry had last spoken to his family via text message on May 15 to tell relatives that he was heading to Death Valley National Park. His car was found by Park Rangers on Lake Hill Road in Panamint Valley on May 31.
After two days of air and ground searches by National Park Service and Bureau of Land Management rangers, California Highway Patrol's A-81 airplane and U.S. Navy's VX-31 SAR helicopter, his body was found about a quarter mile from his vehicle, authorities reported.
The cause of death has not yet been released, but foul play is not suspected.
On May 15, Death Valley recorded a temperature high of 108 degrees.
