A seaplane was attempting to take off over the weekend when it crashed into Ohio's Portage River, sending both the 72-year-old pilot and a 67-year-old passenger to the hospital.

According to police, the Cessna 206 aircraft hit a power line, sending it out of control and into the water.

The incident happened late Saturday afternoon in Ottawa County, about 15 miles west of Sandusky.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol said the pilot, from Florida, was attempting to take off on the river when he hit a power line and the plane crashed down into the water.

First responders arrived to find the plane sinking in the water. Both the pilot and passenger were able to make it to shore before the plane went under. Both were transported to the hospital with what were described as minor injuries.

Utility crews were called to the scene to deal with the downed wire, described as a high voltage power line. Rescue Marine also responded to recover the plane from the river.

The crash remains under investigation.
