DETROIT (WWJ) – Detroit is a world-class music city. From Motown classics to big-name tours like The Beatles, Michael Jackson and the Rolling Stones coming to town, Detroit has deep music roots.
So it takes a lot to capture the collective attention of the area. But it’s safe to say Taylor Swift has done just that as she comes to town this weekend, and some experts say it may be “bigger” than any other show that’s ever come to Detroit.
Thousands of people gathered Thursday outside of Ford Field, just to get their hands on merchandise ahead of her two shows Friday and Saturday. People are listing tickets for more than $10,000. Parking is mostly sold out and in some spots is pushing $1,100. Lions players and coaches are talking about T-Swift in the midst of minicamp. The hysteria is real.
So what makes the Eras Tour so irresistible? On a new Daily J podcast, WWJ’s Zach Clark tries to wrap his head around the hype.
Famed Detroit music journalist Gary Graff tells Clark this weekend’s Swift shows are on par with – and “possibly bigger” than – the spectacle of Paul McCartney playing the Palace, Madonna’s “homecoming” concert and Bob Seger’s homestands.
“It’s everywhere and it’s constant. They’re also feeding an audience with an appetite for Taylor Swift 24/7. The whole thing is just larger than we’ve ever seen or we’ve ever even imagined on a pop culture level,” Graff said.
Fans have been preparing for this weekend for months. Some even have their entire nights planned out, like Audacy Detroit’s Laurie Haddad.
“Me and my three other girlfriends are going, we have a whole night planned,” she said. “We all have our outfits planned… We all know what song we’re gonna go to the bathroom too, if we have to go to the bathroom. And I’m not the only one. I might sound a little crazy, but people are crazy.”
