A recall of more than 6,500 cases of cantaloupes in 19 states and Washington, D.C., has been issued after it was discovered they could potentially be contaminated by salmonella.

The fruit was recalled by Eagle Produce after the Food and Drug Administration conducted a test on the cantaloupe at a distribution center, the FDA shared in a notice.


Recalled products were sold in various supermarkets in California, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, West Virginia, Wisconsin, and Washington, D.C.

The Kandy brand whole cantaloupes have the UPC number code 4050 and lot codes 797901, 797900, and 804918, according to the FDA.

According to the FDA, there haven’t been any reported illnesses caused by the recall, and no other products are affected.

Salmonella is a bacteria that can cause severe and sometimes fatal infections in young children, people with compromised immune systems, and older adults.

Symptoms of salmonellosis often begin six hours to six days after infection, according to the CDC, and include diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, stomach cramps, and fever.

Consumers who are concerned about illness are advised to contact their healthcare provider.
