
Updated 2:40 p.m. CST — The two officers and firefighter who were fatally shot on Sunday morning have been identified by the city of Burnsville.
In a press release, the city shared that just before 2 a.m. officers responded to a report of a domestic situation involving a man who was barricaded in a house with family members on the 12600 block of 33rd Avenue South.
After the officers arrived, the situation grew tense, escalating “into gunfire” with the first responders.
Killed by the gunman during the interaction were Burnsville Police Officers Paul Elmstrand, 27, and Matthew Ruge, 27, along with firefighter Adam Finseth, 40, the release said.
Sgt. Adam Medlicott was also present at the scene but only suffered an injury. He was taken to a local hospital and treated for non-life-threatening injuries, the city shared.
By 8 a.m. the suspect was dead and the family members were able to leave the home safely, the city shared.
It has not been noted how the gunman died.
Updated 11:15 a.m. CTS — Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz released a statement on the news of two officers and a firefighter losing their lives on Sunday morning in a shooting that occurred after police arrived at a domestic call.
Walz shared that the officers were responding to a call “of a family in danger” when the two officers and firefighter were fatally shot.
“We must never take for granted the bravery and sacrifices our first responders make each and every day,” Walz said. “Today, the families of these public servants received the call they knew was possible but hoped would never come. My heart is with those grieving families – the State of Minnesota stands ready to support in any way we can. This is a tragic loss for our state.”
Walz confirmed that the Minnesota Department of Public Safety is assisting in the investigation.
Original story — Several police officers with the Burnsville Police Department were shot on Sunday morning while responding to a domestic call, and at least two were fatally wounded.
A law enforcement source shared with the Pioneer Press that a paramedic at the scene was also shot and killed.
Police are currently at the scene, in the 12000 block of 33rd Avenue S., but no major details have been shared with the public at this time.
A news conference is expected to be held in the coming hours.
