One particular downriver city got some love during Sunday night’s Academy Awards.
While presenting the Oscar for Best Visual Effects, actor Steven Yeun recalled a time when his mom took him to see the film “Terminator 2: Judgment Day” at a theater in Taylor in 1991.
"When I was 7, living in Taylor, Michigan, my mother took me to watch 'Terminator 2' at the theaters. I'm pretty sure she didn't know what the movie was about," Yeun said. "And to her and my surprise, we got to see some stuff.”
"I just remember glancing a few times at my mom, trying to see if this was OK for me to watch, and my mom playing it cool, as if she meant to bring me to this movie," he added.
Yeun, who was up for Best Actor for his role in “Minari,” is also best known for playing Glenn Rhee on "The Walking Dead."
Born in Seoul, South Korea, Yeun and his family moved to Taylor, Michigan when he was a child, and later relocated to Troy. He graduated from Troy High School in 2001 and went on to study at Kalamazoo College. There, he fell in love with improv, which led to his decision to pursue a career in acting.
With his standout role in “Minari,” Yeun became the first Asian-American man to be nominated in the Best Actor category at the Academy Awards.
The Oscar ended up going to Anthony Hopkins for his role in “The Father.”
