The Lions are getting a lot of business done this week. On Friday morning, they picked up the fifth-year options on defensive end Aidan Hutchinson and wide receiver Jameson Williams.
Both players are now officially under contract through 2026. Hutchinson's option will cost about $20 million, while Williams' comes in at about $15.5 million, per Over The Cap.
Both were pretty obvious moves for Detroit, with the Lions squarely in the middle of a Super Bowl window. Hutchinson was playing at a Defensive Player of the Year level last season before fracturing his leg in October and will be ready to go for the start of training camp. Williams cracked 1,000 receiving yards for the first time after being limited by injuries and suspensions in his first two seasons.
Hutchinson is the next in line for an extension in Detroit, after the Lions locked up All-Pro safety and fellow 2022 draft pick Kerby Joseph earlier this week. Given Hutchinson's age, track record and the market for defensive ends, that will likely the Lions at least $40 million per year.
The long-term outlook for Williams is less certain, with GM Brad Holmes acknowledging that the Lions might not be able to pay him what he's worth with so many other important pieces to reward in the years ahead.
"That's one that you just don’t know what’s going to happen from a financial standpoint, because a wide receiver, it’s expensive," Holmes said in March. "It’s very expensive."
But for now, both Williams and Hutchinson are secured for two more seasons as the Lions chase a Super Bowl.
