Ben Chiarot has been a stable piece of the Red Wings' blueline for four seasons. He's staying for three more.

The Red Wings have signed Chiarot to a three-year, $11.55 million extension that ties him to Detroit through the 2028-29 season, with an annual cap hit of $3.85 million.

Chiarot, who turns 35 in May, was set to be a free agent this summer, in the final season of the four-year, $19 million deal he signed with Detroit in 2022.

Chiarot has been a physical, dependable presence on defense for Detroit. In 288 games with the Red Wings, he ranks 21st among NHL defensemen in hits and 11th in blocked shots.

This season, he has settled comfortably into Detroit's second defensive pairing, often as a stabilizing partner for rookie Axel Sandin-Pellikka.

The Red Wings, though, are still seeking another top-four defensemen to fortify the second pair ahead of the March 6th trade deadline, ideally a right-hand shot to partner with Chiarot behind Moritz Seider and Simon Edvinsson.
