The Tigers have added two arms to their pitching staff in a trade with a division rival.
Detroit has acquired right-handed starter Chris Paddack and right-handed reliever Randy Dobnak from Minnesota in exchange for minor league catcher Enrique Jimenez.
Paddack has a 4.95 ERA in 21 starts this season for the Twins after putting up similar numbers last season. His most recent start was one of his best of the year: one run with eight strikeouts and no walks over six innings against the Dodgers.
Paddack, 29, will fill out the back of the Tigers' rotation as they search for reinforcements behind Tarik Skubal, Jack Flaherty and Casey Mize after it was announced Monday that Reese Olson is out for the rest of the regular season with a shoulder strain. Troy Melton, Keider Montero and Sawyer Gipson-Long have taken turns in the rotation over the past couple months, with mediocre results.
Dobnak has spent almost all of this season in Triple-A, where he posted a 7.12 ERA in 17 games (10 starts). He did pitch well in his only outing of the season in the majors in March, but was DFA'd the next day, cleared waivers and has not been called up since.
Dobnak, 30, has pitched in just six MLB games over the last four years.
Jimenez ranked No. 14 among the Tigers' top prospects, per MLB Pipeline, but well behind fellow catchers Josue Briceño and Thayron Liranzo. The headliner of Detroit's 2023 international class, Jimenez, 19, has spent this season in rookie ball.
