The Tigers’ mid-season push to keep pace in the AL Central race took a hit Tuesday night as a pair of rallies late in the game fell short in a 1-0 loss to last-place Kansas City.
Detroit loaded the bases in the 8th inning and Javier Baez was 90 feet away from tying the game with two outs in the 9th, but both frames came up empty.
While the Tigers had scored six or more runs in four of their last five games – all of which were wins – Tuesday’s loss was their fourth shutout in the month of June.
Detroit had just two hits in the game, one from Baez and one from Andy Ibanez.
The Royals’ lone run in the game came from a Matt Beaty double in the sixth inning off Michael Lorenzen, who struck out seven over six innings.
