LIVONIA (WWJ) -- The man accused of stabbing a Livonia police officer inside the department’s lobby has been found not guilty by reason of insanity.
A judge handed down the ruling on Thursday, October 29, concerning the harrowing incident back on on April 3 of this year.
Police said James Patrick McLean was experiencing a mental health crisis when, just after 9 a.m., he walked in and quickly became aggressive inside the police department's lobby.
The man pulled out a knife and made statements indicating he was in crisis, according to the Livonia Police Department.
Officers and a crisis clinician attempted to de-escalate the situation and engage McLean, without success.
During a struggle, the McLean stabbed an officer in the leg before he was stunned with a Taser and taken into custody.
Police said said the man kicked another officer, causing an accidental gun discharge, but no one got shot.
The officer who was stabbed was treated at a hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.
McLean was taken to a hospital for treatment of minor injuries and a psychological evaluation, and was later booked on more than a dozen felony counts, including assault with intent to go great bodily harm, and resisting and obstructing a police officer.
