The Pistons opened free agency Monday by agreeing to a $37 million deal with big man Kelly Olynyk. They closed the day with a pair of depth moves.
First they brought back guard Cory Joseph with a two-year, $10 million agreement, just a couple days after waiving him to clear cap space. Then they agreed to a two-year, $5 million deal with Spurs forward Trey Lyles. Both moves were reported by Chris Haynes.
Joseph played well for the Pistons after arriving at the deadline last season in a trade with the Kings. He provided a steady presence in the backcourt and averaged a career-best 12.0 points and 5.5 assists in 19 games. The 10-year vet was a valuable mentor for rookie Killian Hayes and will be the same for first overall pick Cade Cunningham.
Lyles, 25, is another example of Pistons GM Troy Weaver taking a flyer on a former lottery pick -- something he did last offseason with the likes of Josh Jackson and Jahlil Okafor. The 12th overall pick in 2015, Lyles averaged 5.0 points and 3.7 rebounds while playing in just 23 games last season due to an ankle injury.
The Pistons have also extended qualifying offers to restricted free agents Hamidou Diallo, Frank Jackson and 2020 second-round pick Saben Lee, meaning all three are likely to return.
