It's been a busy day for Red Wings GM Steve Yzerman, topped off by a major trade.
Detroit is sending defenseman Filip Hronek to the Canucks in exchange for a first- and second-round pick in this year's draft. The Wings are also sending a 2023 fourth-rounder to Vancouver.
The announcement came shortly after the Red Wings confirmed an eight-year, $69.8 million extension for captain Dylan Larkin.
Hronek, 25, was in the midst of a career season for Detroit with 38 points and a plus-8 rating through 60 games. He was second on the team in ice time and tied for second in scoring.
But his defensive play had begun to dip, and the Wings have two highly-rated defensemen who are likely to be in the NHL next season in Simon Edvinsson and William Wallinder.
That made Hronek an expendable piece for GM Steve Yzerman, who appears to have sold high ahead of the March 3 trade deadline.
