The Minnesota Twins close to locking up new pitcher Pablo López with an extension worth $73.5 million over four years according to reports including Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic and Fox Sports, and Craig Mish, a reporter out of Miami where López previously played.
López was the main cog in an offseason trade that sent All-Star second baseman Luis Arraez to Miami. The Twins got back Lopez along with two prospects.
So far, López has been terrific this season. The right-hander has a 1-1 record and a 1.73 ERA in four starts. He leads all of MLB with 33 strikeouts.
López was not set to hit free agency until after the 2024 season. Assuming the extension begins next season, this would buy out one arbitration year and three free agency years.
The Twins are coming off a 2-0 loss to Gerritt Cole and the New York Yankees which was the first loss of the year for López. Despite dropping the game, López went a solid 6-innings with 7 strikeouts and gave up two runs.
