Homer! Homer!
That may be the new slogan for the Detroit Tigers, who busted out a new home run celebration in Saturday’s win over the White Sox.
Last season Tigers players donned a Red Wings helmet and ripped a slapshot in the dugout after every home run they hit.
On Saturday new Tiger Mark Canha was the first to break out the “pizza spear,” slamming it to the ground after his solo home run in the 5th inning. Riley Greene got his turn in the 7th as he hit a solo shot of his own to pull Detroit within a run.
Canha finished the day 3-for-5 with 3 RBIs as the Tigers won 7-6 in 10 innings to take the season’s opening series from their division rivals.
The home run celebration sparked some debate on social media, with some wondering exactly where it came from, given Tigers owner Chris Ilitch also owns Little Caesars.
The spear comes from the iconic Little Caesars logo and commercials in which the mascot slams the spear and says “Pizza! Pizza!”
Spencer Torkelson told The Detroit Free Press the team wanted to “mix it up” from last year’s celebration, which was a nod to the Red Wings, also owned by Ilitch.
"We loved the Red Wings celly last year. It's not dead; it can still come back. But our owner owns Little Caesars Pizza. So we're going to give them some love, too. It's great pizza,” Torkelson said, according to the Freep.
Canha said he wasn’t exactly sure what to do with the spear.
"I just slammed it on the ground. It was fun. I love Little Caesars Pizza, so that works for me,” he told the Free Press.
While some may find the celebration *cheesy,* most fans won’t care too much if the Tigers make going yard a frequent habit this season.
