Aaron Boone had perhaps his most entertaining ejection of the year on Monday night, imitating home plate umpire Laz Diaz’s strikeout call while arguing balls and strikes in the eighth inning of a 5-1 loss to the White Sox.
But Boone was not as animated about it the day after, and even sounded regretful when asked about it during his appearance on the “Talkin’ Yanks” podcast Tuesday.
“It was one of those [it] kinda just brewed all game,” Boone said. “[I] was a little upset. I went out there and I think that pitch to [Anthony] Volpe was a strike. …It was a buildup of the whole game.”

It was Boone’s AL-leading sixth ejection of the season and while he may have been ejected on a call that was correct, Diaz was not great the entire game and the data backs that up.
Diaz, unlike other umpires, was also animated and giving it back to Boone just as hard, perhaps even more so.
“I was actually trying to bring it down a couple times,” Boone said. “Laz was giving it back to me pretty hard. I go way back with Laz. I know he’s not very happy with me right now. We both basically came up together. Yeah, he was giving it back to me pretty good.”
Boone has previously expressed dialing back his ejections and outbursts and admitted on Tuesday that his daughter was not too happy with him for his display on Monday night.
Perhaps one of the more awkward things about managerial ejections is having to face the umpire again the next day.
“Hopefully it’s not too personal,” Boone said. “Some guys don’t take it that way. So, we’ll see."
