A two-alarm fire damaged an apartment building at 501 Rue St. Peter Street in Old Metairie this afternoon. Two firefighters were hurt battling the flames.

"The first crew arrived in four minutes and located the fire on the top floor of the North West corner of the building," Jefferson fire officials said in a news release. "After attempting to fight the fire from an interior approach, the fire crews determined it was unsafe and began to fight the fire from the exterior at which point the fire was quickly contained and then pronounced under control at 6:49pm."

The fire department says the two injured firefighters were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. The department did not elaborate on their injuries.

No one else was hurt. The Red Cross responded to the scene to help displaced residents.
