Fare wars may be coming as airlines compete for leisure travelers this fall. Southwest Airlines has announced a three-day sale for fall travel, including $39 one-way tickets between New Orleans and Houston, and $99 tickets between Houston and Fort Lauderdale. Southwest came into the pandemic with the strongest balance sheet of the major carriers, healthy operating margins, and a largely domestic route structure. Those features are all now playing to its advantage with the airline ramping up capacity and offering cut-rate fares.
The total amount of transborder freight in April among the US, Mexico and Canada fell to its lowest since May 2009. The Bureau of Transportation Statistics says total transborder freight in April tumbled 44% from a year ago. Across the US-Mexico border, trucks led the way, followed by vessel, railroads, air and pipelines.
