Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards, the only Democrat to hold a governor’s office in the deep south, says he supports a fetal heartbeat abortion ban.
Louisiana’s Republican-led legislature is currently working toward passing a ban on abortions when the fetus has a heartbeat -- typically around six to eight weeks of pregnancy. Edwards, who has long had a pro-life record, says he’s all for it.
“I was a pro-life legislator, 100 percent with Louisiana Right-to-Life,” said Edwards “When I ran for governor, I said that I was pro-life, so that’s something that’s consistent.”
Governor Edwards said he’s confident most of Louisiana’s voters feel the same.
“People of Louisiana are overwhelmingly pro-life, and this is conversation that we’ve been having here for many, many years,” he said. “It’s not any different.”
The bill’s sponsor, State Senator John Milkovich of Shreveport, is also a Democrat.
