Animal shelter: Fostering a pet lessens surrendered pet population

Patty Burnaman reporting...

Fortunately for us, dogs really don’t practice social distancing.  The local shelters and rescue organizations could use your help.  Michael Schatchman, president of the New Orleans Bulldog Rescue, explains why fostering is a win for everybody.  “It’s a win for the shelter because we have seen an uptake in the number of dogs surrendered, most citing financial uncertainty.  The silver lining is that people who are finding themselves with more free time, are deciding to spend that time either adopting or fostering a dog.”

If you are not ready to commit to adoption, fostering for a couple of weeks helps the dog decompress from shelter life, and enjoy the time in the foster home, and it also helps prepare him for future adoption.  “Hanging out all day at home is an ideal day for a dog, and ultimately benefits the family with a pleasant distraction,” said Michael.

Remember, saving one dog will not change the world but for that one dog, the world will change forever.

If you are thinking of adopting or fostering a dog, you can go to the New Orleans Bulldog Rescue on Facebook, or contact Michael at neworleansbulldogs@gmail.com.   If you are a cat person, you can adopt or foster a cat, too.  In New Orleans, go to La-spca.org, in Jefferson parish, Jeffersonspca.org
