Bank earnings push stocks higher, oil rebounds

Financial stocks led the market higher today, in the wake of better-than-expected first-quarter earnings at JPMorgan Chase.

The Dow Industrials rallied 269 points, the S&P 500 gained 19 and the Nasdaq Composite rose 36. JPMorgan Chase shares soared 4.7%. 

Another big gainer: Disney, up 11.5%, on optimism about its forthcoming Disney+ streaming service.

U-S oil prices rebounded today. May crude rose 31 cents to settle at $63.89 a barrel. For the week, crude was up 1.3%.

Word today that Chevron will acquire Anadarko Petroleum in a deal valued at $33 billion as Chevron seeks to grow stronger in deep water exploration in the Gulf and the energy-rich Permian Basin. If approved, the acquisition would likely close later this year. Anadarko shares surged 32%, but Chevron dipped 5%.
