The United States Coast Guard reports a tugboat involved in moving 29-barges down the Mississippi struck an abutment of the Hale-Boggs Bridge around 1:30 Sunday morning.
According to WWL-TV, the tugboat Cooperative Spirit, which is suspected of being the same boat involved in a deadly collision with another tug in January, was moving 29-barges downriver when the accident happened.
The collision also resulted in the sinking of two barges laden with grain in the main channel.
According to the Coast Guard Division-8 an errant barge reportedly drifted downriver prompting a search for it.
As result, the Coast Guard closed the river to all traffic between mile markers 115-through-122 and has yet to reopen it.
The Department of Transportation inspected the bridge and declared it damage-free.
There were no injuries or loss of life in the incident.
