U.S. Fish and Wildlife officials are conducting a controlled burn today in the Bayou Sauvage National Wildlife Refuge in New Orleans East. The operation helps reduce the amount of flammable material available for potential wildfires.

"Smoke may be observed coming off of the refuge," the city of New Orleans warns in a news release. "This prescribed burn is estimated to be 188 acres of marsh habitat."

The burn will happen in the area designated in this map as 7c, covering 1,040 acres south of the Venetian Ilses subdivision.
