UPDATE: Debate on the bill was delayed until Wednesday, May 29, 2019.
Louisiana lawmakers are set to take up proposed final passage of several abortion bills in the closing days of the legislative session.
Senate Bill 184 is scheduled for House debate Tuesday. It would ban most abortions in Louisiana after about six weeks of pregnancy.
"Proposed law provides that it is unlawful for any person to knowingly perform an abortion with the specific intent of causing or abetting the termination of the life of an unborn human being when a fetal heartbeat has been detected," according to the bills digest on the legislative website.
The Senate already passed the measure, and the governor is expected to sign it.
The bill does make exceptions.
"To prevent the death of a pregnant woman or to prevent a serious risk of the substantial and irreversible impairment of a major bodily function of the pregnant woman."
It also allows for an abortion procedure if "examination does not reveal a fetal heartbeat."
