Boil advisory for parts of New Orleans

A drop in water pressure has triggered a precautionary boil advisory for parts of New Orleans.

The Sewerage and Water Board says customers in the Lower 9th Ward and parts of St. Claude, Bywater, and the Florida and Desire areas should avoid using tap water, unless first boiling it for a full minute. The agency says other areas of the city are not affected.

"Water pressure in the Lower 9th Ward dropped below 20 psi at 10:06 a.m. for a duration of less than 15 minutes. Pressure has returned to normal. SWBNO is investigating the cause and will provide more details as information becomes available," the utility said in a statement.

Bathing is okay but the Sewerage and Water Board says residents should be careful not to ingest any water, and small children and the disabled should be supervised to make sure they do not drink any water. People with open wounds, weakened immune systems, or chronic illness should use boiled or bottled water for bathing.
