Most Uptown residents who have been without water since early Friday morning can now safely drink from their faucets.
However, Sewerage and Water Board customers who have not used their water supply during the precautionary boil water advisory was posted are advised to flush their internal and external plumbing by running water through their system for several minutes.
S&WB Communications Director Richard Rainey said repairs went well after crews found the source of a break in a 114-year-old pipe that caused both street flooding and the advisory.
Bacteriological tests confirmed Saturday afternoon that water in the area was safe to drink and could be used for personal needs.
However, 24 properties will remain under the advisory. These properties lost water service entirely because their water lines are directly tied into the section of the 30-inch water main that had to be repaired.
Door hangers have been hand-delivered by staff to each impacted property where the advisory remains in effect, and S&WB technicians have been dispatched to conduct further water quality tests on those blocks.
Water samples from across the broader impacted Uptown area have tested negative for contamination.
The advisory has been in effect for an area from Napoleon to Carrollton and Claiborne to the River.
Rainey said Saturday's showers, heavy at times, have not further complicated matters.
"The drainage system is working fine with Saturday's rain. It's handling the rain load. Anyone with street flooding problems should go to NOLAready on Twitter or call 52-WATER."
