New Orleans Police called a military ordnance disposal unit after a hand grenade was found in a house in Broadmoor.
According to police, while cleaning a deceased family member's home, relatives found the grenade as it fell to the floor. The pin came out, according to New Orleans Police Superintendent Shaun Ferguson, but the device did not detonate.
"It is in very poor condition," Chief Freguson said. "The hand grenade is rusty."
Because they are dealing with military-grade hardware, military technicians were called in from Ft. Polk. The grenade was safely removed early Wednesday morning.
The 1800 block of S. Gayoso Street was evacuated as a precaution.
