The Mayor of New Orleans owes nearly $100-thousand in unpaid taxes.
According to the Times-Picayune/New Orleans Advocate, the IRS has files a number of liens against her Broadmoor home.
LaToya Cantrell's tax problems first came to light in The Lens, during her campaign for New Orleans' top job in 2017.
The Lens reported then she owed slightly less than $30-thousand.
Cantrell dismissed the liens files back then as a mistake and stated she paid them off before the election.
But the IRS says the Cantrell's had not paid enough, something the Cantrell and her husband initially disputed and ended up paying the amount the IRS said they owed.
Those liens were for unpaid taxes in 2010, 2011, 2012, and 2014.
In 2014, Cantrell refinanced her home, paid taxes and funded repairs to damage from Hurricane Katrina.
The Mayor's office released a simple statement on the recent matter: “As the mayor disclosed in 2017, this matter is being addressed privately by the Cantrell family and their tax attorney. They look forward to resolving it soon."
Unpaid taxes can disqualify candidates running for office in Louisiana, including incumbents and mayors.
