Slidell Police Chief Randy Fandal says his officers did the right thing in arresting a man who cursed his child and officers in a Walmart parking lot.
"I stand by my statement that there was probable cause for the charge of Disturbing the Peace," Fandal explains in a Facebook post. "Every citizen of Slidell should be able to go to Walmart (or anywhere in public) and not be exposed to someone acting out in this manner."
The incident started when Kevin Mitchell cursed at his child for nearly hitting the car parked next to theirs with his door when he opened it.
The officer then confronts Mitchell and tells him not to use that kind of language.

The video below shows what happened next as Mitchell then unleashes a series of curse words and derogatory terms when addressing the officer.
Fandal says, "This subject was NOT arrested for cursing his child, was NOT arrested for cursing at the officer and calling him a N***** (among other obscene words), he WAS arrested for Disturbing the Peace by causing multiple huge disturbances at a public place (Walmart) based on his actions AND by screaming (repeatedly) multiple derogatory and racial words. I am a huge supporter of people’s first amendment rights, but this was a lot more than just the use of obscene words. This subject went on a tirade, in a very public place, while in the presence of multiple children and families who were either trying to either shop or enjoy the Mardi Gras festivities (yes, this was also during a Mardi Gras parade). This type of behavior is simply NOT going to be tolerated."
