Louisiana: The robocall capital of the country

Mad about robocalls? If you live in Louisiana, you've got good reason to be.

This may not surprise you. But, Louisiana folks get more robocalls than anyone else in the country. That's what recent a recent article in Consumer Reports indicates.

CR had the robocall tracking company, YouMail, conduct a national survey. And they found the average Louisianian gets 30 of the nuisance calls a month!

"For the state as a whole, it looks like 30. And Baton Rouge is getting over 50 per person per month," says Alex Quilici, YouMail CEO.

The article didn't say why Louisiana residents get so many of the automated phone calls, but Quilici has a couple of ideas. One is...we're too darn polite.

"It's your good old southern hospitality," he says. "People in the South answer their phones more. And, if you've got scammers on the other end, they're just going to call you more."

"The second is the economics in the South right now. The area's not necessarily doing quite as well as some of the other places in the  country. That means you get more payment reminders, and also people who are more susceptible to scams."

Quilici  says the greatest percentage of robocalls are scam calls, at almost 40 percent. Next are alerts and reminders, payment reminders and telemarketing.

Automated robocalls have become a national epidemic. But, the problem really hits home here in Louisiana.

We do have a challenger, however, for the top spot.

"On a per-person basis, right now, it does seem like Louisiana is #1. But I think Washington, D.C. is #2, and sometimes it bounces back and forth."
