Cops ID man they say shot at Kenner police officer

Authorities are asking for help finding the suspect who shot at a Kenner cop during a traffic stop.

"The Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office and Kenner Police Department are asking for the public’s assistance in locating Hassan Norris, 20," Captain Jason Rivarde said in a news release.


The incident on Riverside Drive in Metairie Monday morning.  

"Norris is wanted for firing a handgun at a Kenner Police Officer during a traffic stop."

Rivarde said an arrest warrant was issued for Norris for one count of attempted first degree murder.

"Anyone with information is asked to call the JPSO Homicide section at 504-364-5300 or contact Crimestoppers."

Kenner Police Chief Michael Glaser said after first refusing to pull over for the officer Thursday morning, the driver eventually stopped over at Power and Riverside Dr. in Metairie, got out of the vehicle, and ran into a nearby apartment complex. 

"The suspect fled the vehicle. The Kenner Police officer gave a foot pursuit," Glaser explained. "As they were running through the complex, the suspect produced a chrome handgun and fired one shot at the police officer, not hitting him."

The officer did not return fire.

Glaser said the suspect managed to escape.

A search of the area was unsuccessful.
