In Terrebonne Parish, a 3-year-old child is shot and the boyfriend of the child’s mother is on the run.

Terrebonne Parish Sheriff Tim Soignet says the shooting happened about 5:24 p.m. on Tuesday.

Sheriff Soignet says deputies were called to a home in the 50 block of Kingsridge Loop about a child that had been shot.

According to the sheriff’s office, the child’s mother’s boyfriend, Rondell Young, told deputies that he was outside the home when a vehicle pulled up and began shooting at him. He told them a stray bullet hit the child. When deputies turned their attention to the child, deputies say Young fled the scene.

Through the investigation, deputies say they have discovered the child actually was left unattended and accidentally shot himself while playing with Young’s gun.

Deputies later learned Young is a convicted felon. Terrebonne Parish Sheriff's Office obtained arrest warrants for Young. He faces one count of Child Desertion, one count of Possession of a Firearm by Convicted Felon and one count of Obstruction of Justice.

Sheriff Soignet asks anyone with information on the whereabouts of Rondell Young to contact Terrebonne Parish Sheriff's Office at (985)876-2500 or the Bayou Region Crime Stoppers at 800-743-7433 and you may be eligible for a cash reward.
